In Remembrance of Chuck Ankenman
A Life of Service. A Legacy of Character. A Scout in Every Sense.
Chuck Ankenman lived a life defined by service, humility, and an unwavering commitment to others. Born on April 7, 1937, on a sheep and cattle ranch in Crawford, Colorado, Chuck carried with him the values of hard work, integrity, and faith throughout his life. After moving to Las Vegas in 1964 with his beloved wife Doris and their two young sons, Chuck began his career as a biology teacher at Las Vegas High School before transitioning into a successful career as a residential real estate broker. Yet, beyond his professional accomplishments, Chuck's true life's work was found in the lives he touched.
For nearly 50 years, Chuck devoted himself to Scouting in the Las Vegas Area Council, formerly the Boulder Dam Area Council, serving as Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, Wood Badge staff member, and in numerous district and council leadership roles. He was a pillar of the Scouting community, known not only for his dedication, but for the way he led, with quiet strength, deep compassion, and a servant's heart. In recognition of his extraordinary service, Chuck was awarded the Silver Beaver Award in 1984, Scouting's highest honor for distinguished volunteer service at the council level.
Chuck embodied the Scout Law in both word and action. He was trustworthy in every commitment he made, loyal to his family, faith, and community, and always helpful to those around him. Chuck did not simply teach the Scout Law; he lived it every day.
One of Chuck's most remarkable contributions came in 1988, when he served as the chair and leader of the Las Vegas Valley Regional LDS Scout Encampment, bringing together approximately 2,600 participants. His leadership helped transform Camp Potosi into a dynamic and lasting outdoor facility, what would later become the Kimball Scout Reservation, creating opportunities for generations of Scouts to experience the outdoors, build character, and grow in leadership. Chuck was, at his core, a teacher and mentor. Through his callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints church and Scouting, he guided hundreds of young people, helping shape their values, confidence, and direction in life. His influence cannot be measured in numbers, but in the countless lives made better because of his example.
Chuck Ankenman was the very definition of a servant leader, someone who led not for recognition, but for impact; not for self, but for others. His legacy lives on in every Scout he mentored, every leader he inspired, and every life he touched.
As we remember Chuck, we are reminded of what it truly means to live a life of purpose. His was a life well lived—one rooted in service, guided by principle, and dedicated to making the world a better place.
Well, done, good and faithful servant.
In lieu of flowers, his family has requested donations to the Las Vegas Area Council.
